In recent months, Bangladesh and China have been in fierce competition in the UK clothing export market. According to the latest data released by the British government, Bangladesh has surpassed China in four months from January to November 2023, becoming the UK’s largest clothing exporter. This achievement marks Bangladesh’s position in the global textile industry is rising.
Although Bangladesh remains second in the UK market in terms of value, in terms of quantity, since 2022, the country has surpassed China for months in a row, becoming the largest garment exporter on the UK market.
The report noted that the total imports of clothing in the UK have declined over the past year due to the effects of the global economy, especially inflation. However, due to the competitiveness of the clothing prices offered by Bangladesh, its market share in the UK has actually increased. The data show that Bangladeshs clothing exports to the UK reached £26,3 billion between January and November 2023, and its market share is still growing despite a decline of £29,8 billion from the same period in 2022.
By comparison, China’s clothing exports to the UK in the same period amounted to £28,3 billion, down £36,8 billion from the same period in 2022, down 22.93 percent, a decline that exceeded Bangladesh, reflecting China’s shrinking market share in the UK.
In addition, UK imports from other major clothing suppliers such as Turkey, Pakistan, Cambodia, India and Vietnam also fell. The data showed that in the 11 months, UK imports from these countries fell by 27.5%, 12.65%, 16.48%, 12.53%, and 16.48%, respectively.
Bangladesh’s garment industry has grown significantly over the past few years, not only in terms of quantity, but also in terms of improving production standards and workers’ rights. These changes have helped boost Bangladesh’s image and competitiveness in the international market.
As the third largest market for Bangladeshs clothing exports, the UKs market dynamics have a significant impact on the Bangladesh economy. The government and related industries are working to further enhance its position in the international market to address changes and challenges in the global economic environment.
As the global economic landscape continues to change, competition between Bangladesh and China in the UK and other markets is expected to continue. The parties will closely monitor the development trends in the industry, especially in the context of the current global economy facing many uncertainties.
