China-led international standard for functional safety of new energy vehicle energy storage systems officially released

I. Content and characteristics of the standard

In recent years, with theNew EnergyWith the rapid development of automotive technology in the direction of electrification, intelligence and networking, functional safety and standardization have become hot topics in the industry. Especially when it comes to power batteries and other energy storage systems, the safety of these core components directly affects the safety of the vehicle and passengers. This is the background for the birth of the new international standard ISO/TR9968:2023 led by China.

Based on ISO26262:2018 (functional safety of road vehicles), this standard proposes a set of functional safety requirements including safety architecture, failure hazard risk, safety solution design, safety test evaluation, and production, operation, maintenance and scrapping stages, targeting the multi-technology coupling and complex safety risk factors of power batteries and other energy storage systems. This not only provides strong technical support for the research and development, testing and operation and maintenance of new energy vehicle products, but also provides a key standard basis for the popularization and application of new energy vehicles.

II. International Cooperation and China’s Role

In the process of formulating this important international standard, China not only took the lead in proposing the standard proposal, but also obtained the approval of the International Organization for Standardization Road Vehicle Committee Electronic and Electrical Components and Common Systems Technical Committee (ISO/TC22/SC32), established a special standard group, and served as the convener. More importantly, the formulation of this standard was not done alone, but by experts from many countries including Germany, the United States, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, Austria, Ireland, Canada, etc.

This fully demonstrates China's global influence and leading role in the formulation of standards for new energy vehicles and their key components. At the same time, it also shows that China is willing to conduct broader and deeper cooperation with all parties around the world in promoting sustainable transportation and green travel.

III. Next Steps and Outlook

With the official release of this international standard, China will further strengthen cooperation with international organizations and parties, especially in the formulation and revision of international standards in key areas such as automotive functional safety. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has planned to organize China Automotive Technology and Research Center Co., Ltd. and other units to adhere to the principle of simultaneous research and formulation of international and domestic standards and deeply participate in the formulation of standards in this field.

This will not only help to continuously enhance China's participation and contribution in global automotive standards and regulations, but also be an important way to promote the high-quality development of the domestic new energy vehicle industry. In the long run, this will help China's new energy vehicle industry occupy a more favorable competitive position in the global market.
